Descendants listed in Julia Hankal’s Obituary (daughter of Hezekiah and Mariah Hankal)
Julia Hankal was born in 1880 and died June 30, 1963 –Her obituary in the Johnson City Press Chronicle listed as survivors-- nephews, James Hezekiah Law and Earnest Roseboro, niece –Dr. Thelma P. Law and great grand niece, Anna P. Law. After making contact with a surviving great grandson of Hezekiah Hankal, Eric Law of Charlotte NC, I have added more information about this family that Eric shared with me.
A. James Hezekiah Law –son of Anna Hankal Law (Edwards) and John Law. Anna Hankal was born in 1879 and died April 7, 1947. John Law’s date of birth and death are unknown.
James was born in 1898 in Virginia and died June, 1966. He married Mary Elizabeth Wilson Law. (6/14/1898-6/3/1982) James Hezekiah Law was 2 years old when his parents were divorced. James Hezekiah Law was listed as living in the household of Hezekiah and Mariah Hankal in the 1900 census (1 year old). He was also listed as living with Mariah Hankal in the 1910 census as 12 years old.
(His grandfather, Hezekiah Hankal died in 1903)
1 . Son- James (Jimmy) Roland Law- Born Feb. 23,1926, died March 10, 1996 (married Aurelia Liston Law who was born on July 5,1927. She married Jimmy on April 19, 1957 and died June 6, 2007.
a. Sons and daughters-in-law of Jimmy and Aurelia Law are Eric Law and Rita Harmon Law, Charlotte NC and Stanley and Anita Law, Cincinnati, Ohio. Eric’s stepdaughter is Markitta Harmon. They have one granddaughter Addisyn Liliana Sifford born July 23, 2010.
2. The second wife of James Hezekiah Law was Dr. Thelma Patten Law (died Nov.12, 1968)
a. James Hezekiah Law and Dr. Thelma P. Law’s daughter was Pauline Anna Law (died December 11, 1968)
B.- Earnest Roseboro – He was the grandson of Hezekiah and Mariah Hankal and the son of Ella Hankal Roseboro (she died Sept.25, 1931) Earnest was listed as living in Detroit, MI in 1963 (whereabouts and descendants are unknown)
Note: Daughters of Hezekiah Hankal--Julia Hankal, Anna Hankal Law Edwards, and Ella Roseboro are all buried in Johnson City, TN at West Lawn Cemetery. All of Hezekiah Hankal’s daughters and a son are also buried there. There is also one grandson, Dr. Jordan B.(Spurgeon?) Hankal, buried there.

Approximate chronological order of events
First Hankal family in Boones Creek was Herman Hankal born 1763-1783?, death approximately 1828. Herman immigrated to the states from Germany some time before 1801. Married to Margaret Haile (daughter of Mescheck Hale and Mary Buckingham) Margaret born in 1783 in TN. Herman and Margaret met and married March 17, 1801 in Baltimore, Maryland.
Margaret’s family was considered to be one of the earliest pioneer families of Washington County, TN
1824 Meshack Haile (Margaret’s father) will dated 1824.
Deeded 120 acres to Margaret in1820. Herman is not mentioned so it is assumed that he is deceased.
1825 Hezekiah born May 10th in Boones Creek, TN (possibly Free Hill?)
1830 Census- Hezekiah possibly living with Margaret Haile Hankal (husband Herman Hankal probably deceased.) Census list Margaret with 2 male children 1 under 5, 1 ages 10 to 15, 1 female 40 to 50) If she was his mother she would have been 43 when he was born. No slaves listed on 1830 census for Margaret or Nancy.
1830 Census - Hezekiah possibly living with Nancy Hankal next door to Margaret Hankal (2 males under 5, 1 female under 5, 2 females 20 to 30--may be Nancy’s sisters Margaret (1812) and/or Elizabeth (1810). Nancy was born in 1802 so she would have been 23 when Hezekiah was born. (no husband listed)
James Hankal was her brother. He married Susannah Bowman in 1836 when he was 19 years old. James was born in1817.--only 8 years old when Hezekiah was born.
1840 Census-Margaret Haile Hankal living with 1 male ?
1841 or 1843 Hezekiah leaves his home because of community gossip.
(16 to 18 years old) (based on letter from his daughter, Areatha Hankal Bush written in 1969) He was bi-lingual and evidently spoke fluent Deutsch (German). No record of his activities at this time.
1850 Census Hezekiah living with Margaret Haile Hankal--listed as free black- age 24
1861 Margaret Haile Hankal’s will lists Hezekiah as her son and leaves property to him and his brothers and sisters (to be divided between 5 heirs). Margaret signed her will with her mark--evidently can’t read or write.
1865 Margaret Haile Hankal dies. Buried in Buffalo Ridge Church yard.
1865 Hezekiah listed as a member of Boones Creek Christian Church (no notation as colored) age 39. Preached some at this church.
1866 Ordained as minister at Boones Creek Christian Church Feb. 11, 1866?
1867 or 1868 Married Mariah Netherland (born Aug. 27, 1848) 23 years her senior. I believe she was the daughter of freed bi-racial slaves Jordan Netherland (born 1814) and Jane Lynn. (Mariah was the granddaughter of a slave, Luvenia-Jordan’s mother .) Jordan Netherland’s white family ran Netherland Inn in Kingsport. Hezekiah was about 43 years old and Mariah was 20 years old when they married.
1868 Hezekiah and Mariah settled in Johnson City, TN
1866-69 Hezekiah hired by Christian Church to evangelize freed African American families. More than 300 baptized in four years. Established 4 churches -- Johnson City, Jonesboro, Bristol, and near Washington College Academy.
1869 First child was born (Nannie J. Welch-probably Nancy Elizabeth Hankal .) Daughter Areatha Hankal Bush says in her letter that Hezekiah’s sister, Betsy came to stay with them in their house to help her mother (Mariah). Margaret Haile had a daughter named Elizabeth (1810) Not sure about Nancy’s children’s names. Areatha also said Hezekiah’s mother, Nancy visited her mother and father at their home. Hezekiah’s children
were not allowed by their mother to ask questions about his parentage.
1869 Hezekiah buys land on Market Street in Johnson City (probably for a house.)
1869-1874 Taught at one room log school on Roan Hill (moved to Dr. Hankal’s house in 1871)?
1870 Second child Alice Hankal Spurgeon Callens born June 25th.
1870-1881 Three more children were born ( some birthdates unknown)

Freddie H. Dennis (daughter) born Jan. 1881, died April 5, 1976 (have obituary)
1870 Census listed Hezekiah as a physician as age 45--practiced after teaching school on weekdays and on Saturdays until he became a full time physician. He was accepted by the white doctors because of his tremendous success in treating patients in a cholera epidemic. (1873)
1873 birth of daughter, Sarah Margaret C. Hughes died 3-20-1942
1873 Dr Hankal was issued Teaching Certificate, Oct 6, 1973
1874 Stops teaching and becomes full time physician)
1880 census--age listed as 52 (discrepancy from 1870 Census)
1880 Daughter-Julia Nelson Hankal was born-she was in first graduating class of Langston School-became a teacher at Langston, died June 30, 1963 (we have her obituary)
1882 Daughter-Estelle Hankal Moorman born Oct 23, 1882--died April 15,1973
1886 Daughter- Areatha Hankal Bailey Bush born August 10, 1886, died May 8, 1981, (was head of nursing at a hospital in St. Louis, MO ( we have a letter written by her about her father in 1963) Hezekiah’s age would have been about 61 years old when she was born. Areatha was the last child of Hezekiah and Mariah to die.
1887 Hezekiah was elected to the Johnson City Board of Alderman. He was active in politics and knew several important politicians (Aretha’s letter) He also was a juror.
1888 Son- Jordan H. Hankal (died as a boy or infant?-Jan. 31, 1888)
1888 Church lot was purchased on West Main Street on October 22,1888.
Check for church was written by West Main Christian Church.
1889 West Main Christian Church building was built (attendance 50 to 75
Financed by Hezekiah.
1893 Hezekiah was instrumental in getting Langston High School built. The school opened in 1893. Dr. Hankal served on a board of five commissioners where his role was to represent and promote the educational interests and needs of African American students.
1903 Hezekiah Hankal dies June 20, 1903. (age about 78)
1906 Hankal home burns
1940 Wife Mariah Netherland Hankal dies (92 Years old) Nov. 30 1940
